From South Georgia Museum
Our latest addition to the team, Jane Hill, arrived in South Georgia at the end of January. Having spent many years teaching in the Falkland Islands, she is hoping to share her South Georgia experiences with schools in the UK. She is really enjoying her time so far and has been involved in processing artefacts which were moved from Shackleton House to the Museum for safe keeping when Shackleton House was demolished in 2001.
Team Museum recently gathered at Shackleton's graveside for a toast. Any excuse really for a tot of something warming! A toast at the grave of Ernest Shackleton has become a popular part of cruise ship visits with a member of expedition team undertaking the toast.
As well as continuing to roll out our souvenirs for the Made in South Georgia label, Bridget has been creating replica scrimshawed sperm whale teeth. Her designs are inspired by the heritage and wildlife of South Georgia and give passengers the opportunity to take away a unique artwork made on the Island.
The Carr Maritime Gallery has continued to grow following the official opening in March 2009. A number of visitors miss the gallery, which is situated in a building adjacent to the managers villa. This sign has been erected outside the main museum building and will hopefully make people more aware of the gallery.
The Museum shop has also continued to grow and we now stock a wide range of South Georgia based souvenirs and books. The shop can get extremely busy during cruise ship visits and the team are usually rushed off their feet!
